| The popular reggae group, Anthem, will entertain U.S. troops stationed in the Pacific with their distinctive blend of roots and dancehall reggae May 23-June 24. More than a pure reggae band, Anthem's music reflects the influence of urban contemporary, R&B and pop sounds.
Hailing from Bridgeport, Connecticut, the group was formed in 1996 by Jamaican-born Courtney "Coozie" Mellers. He is joined by band members Rob Williams, Carey Mellers, Charles Mellers and Jermaine Mellers.
"We have numerous family members who have proudly served in the military, so it means a lot to us personally to be able to perform for our troops stationed overseas," said Coozie Mellers. "We hope that our distinctive individual style of reggae will liven up their spirits a little bit."
Anthem has performed with internationally acclaimed reggae groups including: Sister Carol, Third World, Yellow Man, Jimmy Cliff, the Wailers Band and Burning Spear. The group released the well-received CD titled "Are You Ready?" on Mack Avenue Records in 2004.
"Anthem offers up great reggae singing and harmonies with a unique crossover appeal," said Frank Tagatac, Armed Forces Entertainment Pacific circuit regional coordinator. "This group is undoubtedly one of the most energetic and charismatic bands in the reggae business."
