| WASHINGTON – The USO and Armed Forces Entertainment has teamed up with the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders for the group’s 60th overseas tour to entertain troops at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and Fort Buchanan and Coast Guard Air Station Borinquen, Puerto Rico, Sept. 22-Oct. 1. The troupe will spend their days visiting with and saying “Thank You” to as many service members and their families as possible, then perform their 75-minute Broadway revue-style show in the evenings.
For 34 years, the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders have been internationally recognized entertainers, featured in movies, television and special events around the globe. These women also have committed themselves to entertaining America’s armed forces. In 1979, the U.S. Department of Defense requested their presence on a USO tour to Korea. Since then, the squad has gone on more USO tours than any other entertainment group.
Last December, members of the squad participated in their 26th Christmas visit to troops and their families serving in Korea and joined the Sergeant Major of the Army on his holiday tour to Kuwait, Afghanistan and Iraq. Past visits from “America’s Sweethearts” also include Walter Reed Army Medical Center and the National Naval Medical Center. They were part of the USO’s first tour to Iraq in 2003 and have entertained troops stationed in Kosovo, Germany, United Arab Emirates, Bosnia, Italy and Hungary. In 1991, the Cheerleaders were presented with the USO’s 50th anniversary award, and, in 1997, the USO recognized their dedication with its most prestigious honor, the “Spirit of Hope” Award.
This tour continues the USO tradition of bringing entertainment to service members serving far from home. Other celebrities who have recently made trips for the USO include Drowning Pool, Gary Sinise, Shinedown, La Mafia, Toby Keith and Pryde.
USO tours are sponsored by AT&T, Inc., the official telecommunications sponsor of USO entertainment tours.
