| Marvin & The Experience will bring their distinctive R&B/hip hop sound to troops stationed in the Caribbean, April 10-27. Lead vocalist and percussionist Marvin Hawkins describes the Cincinnati-based group as a combination of old-school funk and soul and new-school hip-hop. "This tour will showcase the roots of Cincinnati R&B, funk, rockabilly and hip-hop," he said. "Our show really pays homage to Cincinnati's rich musical history and we're excited to share this with our troops."
Hawkins will be joined on tour by emcees B. Ron Don and D. Griff; DJ Mr. Pillo; drummer Dontae Mackey; keyboardist Bryan "Bud" Fairbanks; keyboardist and bass player Ron Avant; and lead female vocalist Siobhan McNear.
Hawkins, who toured with AFE in 2004 and 2005 as part of the African dance and drum group, Bi-Okoto, is eager to perform for the troops again. "The troops are always so appreciative to have us come over to perform," he said. "It's a different kind of energy than it is at home."
A multi-talented performer, Hawkins attended the Cincinnati School for the Creative and Performing Arts, where he received training in dance, drama, instrumental music and both classical and musical theater. In addition to being an accomplished singer and musician, he has starred in numerous off-Broadway productions and has performed with the Cincinnati Summer Opera Company. With his previous band, Nu' Gruv, he opened for such national acts as Usher, Eric Benet, Paul Anka and Roberta Flack.
"Marvin & The Experience is a remarkably talented group that performs R&B/funk/hip-hop songs with a delivery that is fresh and original" said AFE representative. "I know that everyone who sees this show will thoroughly enjoy it."
