On their 22nd tour since 1999 with Armed Forces Entertainment, Washington Redskins Cheerleaders will visit military bases in the Caribbean. The group will perform in Honduras Aug. 27-28.

“The Washington Redskins Cheerleaders always put on a great show for the troops ,” said Army Captain Trevor Garrett, Armed Forces Entertainment Caribbean circuit manager. “This group has continued to demonstrate their commitment to the troops by performing on more than 20 tours overseas.” Armed Forces Entertainment has hosted the squad at nearly every military base overseas over the last 10 years, including multiple appearances at bases in the Middle East.

Started in 1962, the Washington Redskins Cheerleaders are the longest running squad in the National Football League, thus the nickname “First Ladies of Football.” The cheerleading team performs for audiences of all sizes, but some of their biggest audiences are still at their home stadium where they regularly entertain 90,000 fans. When the squad is not performing for audiences all around the nation, they host dance camps and clinics for kids ages 7-17, teaching them what it really takes to be a professional Washington Redskins Cheerleader through dance technique, choreography and presentation.

Performing for the military is important to the Washington Redskins Cheerleaders, as several of the ladies were born and raised in military families. One of the cheerleaders is a navy nurse at the Bethesda Naval Hospital in Bethesda, Maryland. Another cheerleader was united with her brother-in-law, who was serving in the military, during a performance in Iraq in 2004.

“Our favorite aspect of these tours is bringing a little piece of home to the military personnel overseas,” said Melanie Treanor, director of the Washington Redskins Cheerleaders. “It’s a great opportunity for us to travel, meet new people and give a little back to those who sacrifice so much for our freedom.”
