The Urban Sophisticates to tour with Armed Forces Entertainment for the first time

Greensboro, North Carolina-based group, The Urban Sophisticates, is bringing their unique style of live hip-hop to the Pacific. They are set to tour Guam, Japan, Korea and Okinawa with Armed Forces Entertainment August 27- September 24.

“We take great pride in the fact that we’ve been chosen to entertain those who are risking so much to ensure our safety. We’re excited for the opportunity to see the world and experience new cultures but most of all, we are looking forward to doing some small part to keep those men and women strong,” said Benton James, lead vocalist.

Originally formed in 2001, the current line-up of group members came about in 2006.  Live drums, guitar, bass, trombone and trumpet, accompanied by lead vocalist, Benton James’ witty, self-deprecating rap and his brother Aaron James’ smooth vocals, are what gives this group a distinct and memorable sound.

With diverse musical influences ranging from R&B, jazz, hip-hop, rock, funk, and blues, The Urban Sophisticates create music that has been described as poetic, spiritual and catchy. Without using profanity or references to violence or firearms, The Urban Sophisticates use their music to express a sarcastic, social commentary that is effective, but not offensive.

“The Urban Sophisticates are an ideal group to tour with us because they are great performers and are so enthusiastic about putting on a show for the troops and their families. Their sound is definitely urban and edgy, and will be enjoyed by everyone,” said Frank Tagatac, Armed Forces Entertainment Pacific circuit and regional manager.

In 2006, competing against over 1,300 unsigned bands and independent artists, The Urban Sophisticates won the Disc Makers (the largest CD manufacturer for independent artists) Independent Music World Series Southeast Showcase Award, ranking them as one of the top independent bands in the country. The Urban Sophisticates, among the other regional winners, shared the grand prize of a $250,000 package including recording gear, instruments, and CD manufacturing service.

Additionally, the band has been selected various times by Christian Music Festival, Cornerstone, as a top independent act.
